Guide to modding your ps3

Posted on

What your about to read is not my article. I found this article over at http://ps3mods.blogspot.com/2006/11/replace-your-ps3-hd-video.html. I take no responsibility for any damage you cause to your system if you decided to try this. I did not originally write this article or guide.  Enjoy the read.

A very detailed look at replacing the SATA hard drive in your PS3. This one is a 20gb unit.

Equipment needed:

  • Larger SATA notebook (2.5″) hard drive (hd), 5400rpm or 7400rpm.
  • External hd or large USB drive formatted to FAT32 to backup your PS3 downloads or anything on the oem hd. (optional)
    • 32gb is the larger FAT32 partition for Windows XP. So if you fill up the 60gb ps3 drive you can’t back up the whole drive.
    • Maybe a larger partition can be made on a MacOS but we’re not familiar.
  • A ph1 or ph2 sized phillips screwdriver to avoid stripping the hard drive screws.
    • Be very careful because the screws maybe orvertorqued and are soft.

Instructions on upgrading the ps3 hard drive.

  1. Connect the external hd or usb drive by usb to the ps3. Turn on the external hd.
  2. Turn on the ps3.
  3. Backup the ps3 data. (optional)
    • On the ps3 xmb
      • Settings – System Settings – Backup Utility – Backup
        • The duration of this process will depend on the amount of data on the ps3.
  4. Turn off the ps3 and unplug all cables from the rear.
  5. On the right hand side of the ps3 you will see a plastic tab with an HDD sticker. Remove this from the right edge with a thin lever.
  6. Discharge static electricity from your body. Unscrew the blue screw in the middle.
  7. Lift the tab and push the hd to the right. Now you can pull out the ps3 hd.
  8. Remove all four (4) screws that hold the oem SATA hd to the hard drive carrier.
  9. Install your new hd with the label facing up, and the ports are exposed by using the four (4) screws.
  10. Insert the hd, and hard drive carrier to the right of the ps3 hard drive port using the tab.
  11. Slide the hd to the left with the tab. You will feel the SATA and power connectors engage.
  12. Flip tab down and secure the hd with the blue screw.
  13. Reinstall the plastic hd port cover.
  14. Turn on the ps3 and it will recognize that it’s a new hd.
  15. Format the hd.
  16. A reboot of the ps3 will be required.
  17. Most of your settings will be restored.
  18. Restore the ps3 data. (optional)
    • On the ps3 xmb
      • Settings – System Settings – Backup Utility – Restore
        • The duration of this process will depend on the amount of data on the external hd.
  19. A reboot will need to be performed.
  20. ps3 hard drive upgrade completed.

A good interview. Be warmed allot of jargon and tech talk but you can understand most of it 😉 Noob.

Below I have provided a Rage preview video

While we are on the subject of Id and John Carmack. Quakecon just passed this weekend unveiling QUake Live. A free remake of the world renown Quake III game. This version of the remake will allow any computer with hardware basically from the past 3 years to run. This version will be browser based. So any computer will be able to run it. You can find out more about these games by visiting http://www.idsoftware.com/

OK im a huge fighter fan. Since Street Fighter 2 and so on played them all. Whether it was me cutting school to go to the nearest arcade and play or seeing my cousin smash a kids head into the SF2 screen I have loved it. I just feel fighting games are an extension of our fists. No I don’t promote violence this is of course written to entertain you. In the words of Maximus “Is this not what you want? Is this not why you are here?”  Aight lets get on to the videos. I’ll start with Tekken 6 footage.

Can’t forget THE fighting game of them all Street Fighter 4, this is only a cam video but it looks awesome to play i cant wait. Its gonna be released for the PC, xbox, ps3 and of the course ARCADE.

Now the new released Soul Calibur 4. I’m hearing good things about it. I was never hardcore into the series. I do remember having fun the few times i played it and the beautiful graphics in it and you can use Yoda. Who wouldn’t want that. Below though you get to see Darth Vader go at it.

Hey guys whats up? I figure today ill tap into something I’ve loved all my life and done since i was a we kid. Since i got my first Atari 2600 till recently when I sold my Xbox I have been a hardcore gamer. My gamer life started on console of course then the arcades as my dad and uncle bowled away me and my cousin blew quarters. Games like Centipede, Space invaders, Golden Axe, Double Dragon, Mortal Kombat, Nba Jam and finally the mother of all arcade games Street fighter 2. I love sf2 to the point where i own 2 arcade sticks to play when company comes over. Somewhere between the ps1 era I started to discover the pc as a gaming platform on line. I had a commodore 64 before that for classics like HardBall and kung fu or was it Sidekick i don’t recall the game where one of the bonus levels you needed to knock out a bull. Anyways, I started to mess with games like Duke Nukem 3d and a demo from ID software called Quake. I fell for Quake in a heartbeat but back in the days without a real isp or connection it was basically unplayable. SO i stuck it out with my elite Packard Bell p166 and 4 gigs of memory. Duke Nukem dial up its on. I played for hours with friends. No lie since i discovered that method of gaming calls where not getting through in my house hold. Lets fast forward now to me playing through games like warcraft 2, diablo, discovering Mirc and other addicts like myself and then getting on to the first crack on the Internet. Everquest…there went my social life and everything else ;). I’m sure i wasn’t the only one as Sony still makes expansions for the game today. I put in a good 2-3 years of hardcore playing , no sleep and countless Internet hassles to just play. I used AoL, Bluelight, NEtZero, till i finally got my own real isp. IDT. I met numerous players on there who went on to travel the world and dominate there region or coast. West and East side of the US. One of the people I met and became friends with was an old evil genius player called Gemini. He went on to visit Sweden in a exhibition between NA and EU. Eu had destroyed our legends bad back then known as deathrow with players like Thresh and Unholy from netquake part of the game. Our quakeworld side of the game faired way better. Later on quake 2 came out and i wasn’t a big fan because my voodoo 1 was a really big fan of it and people where running dual voodoo 2 cards. Those cheaters! 😉 Quake 1 was still going on heavy tho, about the time celeron 300a’s came out. People overclocked those to 450, threw in a Riva Tnt2 card and packed in a whopping 128 megs of ram and we where good to go! Then through all that i was getting more and more hooked on Everquest. I was a halfling druid lvl 50 when ruins of kunark came out. That name alone brings back memories and rivalrys that went beyond the game. I seen marriages come from the game and break up in real life. Amazing huh? I played EQ through planes of power right through gates of discord and quit. SOLD my lvl 65 Shadow Knight to break the habit and get into CS source which I ended up hating and started playing CS 1.6. Through that deal CS was really going strong and Quake 3 was doing great. I found Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004. I never put my heart into 2003 but loved 2004 where i met friends i still talk to today and game with. Played through it till it died and moved on to World of Warcraft another 2 years of social life thrown away =) Made tons of more friends and it rocked. I don’t regret. To break that habit I traded this time for a good video card a x850gt agp card so I can run QUAKE 4! I was disappointed with it, people where more into painkiller had a community of like 20 pro players who where all on the circuit for cpl world tour. Saw a friend travel the world under Fatality’s crew. So after that i got into Call of duty 2 destroyed the single player never really got into the multiplayer until call of duty 4. Between that ordeal i got into half life 2 great single player game, was never a fan of multi. Played source in cal with friends and tried my hardest to get into it, watching demos and demos. Eventually i realized I was making more work out of a game then just having fun. I invest my money in a cyberpowerpc later on in the future fx 62, 7950gx2 and 2 gigs of corsair2 xms ram which I’m still running today with no problems. Welp my 7950 died and i got sent a 8800gts that runs with no problems 😉 Now im here stuck with what i feel is the death of 1v1 deathmatch games. An old fashion showdown that his been replaces with bigger world combat team oriented games. Call of duty 4, Quake Wars, Battlefield’s, Team Fortress 2 the list goes on. This weekend we get taken back to an old Lan tournament known for years with the QUake series. Where im sure most main games will be ID software based and All quake. This time tho they give us a surprise QUAKE ZERO or LIVE for free! Our first look at what i hope will revive the deathmatch genre. If your old school like myself and are hungry for fraggin the life our of people all night like we used to do…then i feel your pain. Now we have games like Halo 3 and nubbish mainstream games stealing the thunder. Whatever. Let me see what systems ive had and what games made an impact like i can play over and over for the rest of my life. Atari 2600 – pong, combat, pac man Atari 5600 – pole position Vectrix – the default game that was a rip off of asteroids but man we had some major family wars with that one. Commodore 64 – HARDBALL Nintendo – Super Mario brothers, Zelda and baseball stars Sega – Rocky, Never had a turbo graphics or the hand held which i wanted bad Sega Genesis – NBA jam, Joe Montana football, madden, nba live, lakers vs celtics, Super Nes – final fantasy 3, street fighter 2, chrono trigger Sega Dreamcast – marvel vs capcom 2, crazy taxi, jet set radio – wish i still play on chankast playstation 1 – tekken, grand turismo, and i cant remember anymore lmao n64 – Mario Kart 64 , starfox 64 and that zelda game and donkey kong 64 playstation 2 – all the games i got now, virtua fighter 4, street fighter 3 and super street fighter turbo, tekken 4, soul calibur, final fanstasy 10 and i haven’t played 12 yet , shoot me xbox – halo , splinter cell, mech warriors, fable xbox 360 – halo 2, halo 3, virtual fighters 5, guitar hero 3, forza 2 pc – quake , everquest, quake 3, world of warcraft, call of duty 4, number free games online but mainly rakion.

just a lil post of the gaming side of me with no real goal or point. Feel free to post what you had growing up and what games you remember the most.

Yahoo claims Sony takes console lead on war with MS

Posted on Updated on

Ah yes another e3 show come and gone. The age old question of xbox vs PS3 and Nintendo are with us once again. Yahoo’s front page claims that the Sony Playstation 3 has taken the lead. My theory is the lead in what? A dead system can’t run. Sony and the ps3 was an epic failure at launch. It arrived like a dead newborn. Too late, too expensive, too far behind to the 360. Am i a 360 fan boy, no. I play hardcore PC games. I do own a xbox 360 tho. Maybe yahoo meant Sony took the lead over the wii. A system with no better graphics then the game cube just way more innovation then the 360 and Playstation 3. Sony has done 2 things right as far as the system goes. Blue ray player and the backwards compatibility of older gen games from Sony. Unlike the 360 who’s HD player has died and waiting for them to make old classics re playable on the new system can suck. What the 360 did do was give us everything we wanted out of the box. Internet multiplayer gaming. Online media entertainment. Pc to xbox streaming and interaction with media. Some huge blockbuster games. Like gears of war, (btw F epic for not caring about the pc unreal tournament community and ut3), Halo 3, Call of duty 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Assassins creed, Oblivion. O yea and stealing most of Sony’s big game exclusives. Final Fantasy now on the xbox 360 wagon. If Square soft jumped ship then something must be going right at Microsoft that isn’t happening at Sony. Lets see could it be the billion dollar chip that every developer hates programing for. Unlike the 2 amd cpu and ati 2 gpu dx10 hardware in the 360?. hmm. Sony gave us…Metal gear solid 4 awesome cinematic movie that you can play part in. Has Oblivion to. Fall of man. Keep this in mind I’m not saying the ps3 sucks overall I just believe they aren’t in the lead like yahoo claims. A cheering crowd doesn’t make you the man. Ask Alex Rodriguez. Ok im gonna post some specific things from the article yahoo had in the front page when I decided to write this. “Sony impresses, Microsoft surprises,” – Sony impresses by implementing more the stuff the xbox has been doing. Releasing more games, finally? As far as the online aspect. Xbox had games and the online aspect for the past 2-3 years now. welcome to 3 years ago. xbox 1- sony 0 “Despite rumors of price cuts, Microsoft opted to expand the hard drive of its mid-range offering instead of delivering any real savings to consumers” Xbox was available at 300 bux at launch the cheapest. 400 premium and higher for the bundle package. Sony in the other hand didn’t give you a choice. 500-600 bux at launch counting eBay. Pricey compared to the xbox. It did come with a blue ray player which many argue is still a great buy for 500-600 bux. Sony came out 1 year after the xbox and didn’t have enough systems to provide for the high demand after the long wait. I think it lost allot. Sony got to the point where the c.e.o of Sony retired on them or got fired I cant recall. xbox 2- sony 0 “Unlike Microsoft’s offerings, which have a vague “fall” ETA, Sony’s new online features should be available by the time you read this.” Microsoft delivers is the difference between Sony. The second half of the quote proves it. You should have online features by the time you read this. Xbox has had it since the first xbox. Sony you had dial up since the ps2, how is it ps3 is getting it so much later then it was claimed. Xbox 3- Sony 0 “That wasn’t all, though. Sony’s press conference rolled out a set of game trailers that had fans cheering: a new God of War game on PS3, a vast-looking massive action game named MAG, and a couple of promising superhero games: one massively-multi player title based on the DC superhero universe, and one futuristic, open-city game from the Sly Cooper studio. It’s a great selection, and one that leaves Microsoft’s roster of Gears of War 2 and Fable II looking a little tired.” Playstation 3 God of war 3 trailer- http://www.gametrailers.com/player/36463.html MAG – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTGOP_NkmW8 Here’s a montage of trailers from the e3 2008 show and the ps3 – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9P_YGIqhH0  Personally i think the Xbox has this one again. GoD2 was a fun game. Its a gun series. I look forward to seeing it on the ps3 when it releases. MaG looks like Front Lines on the xbox. The montage shows allot of cool games for the ps3 we will have to wait and see what they develop into. Now Final Fantasy speaks for itself. The legendary almost god like series finally makes it to the consoles of today and man i can’t wait to play. Fallout was a very popular pc futuristic rpg game on the pc back in the days. I’m hoping it lives up to its past. Halo wars I’m sure will make noise but I’m not sure why you would play a rts on a console system but it is Halo so don’t be surprised to see it make a little noise on release. Last but not least the mofo’s at epic hitting us with another Gears of War. This time with the sequel and it looks awesome. I am looking forward to another ps3 monster called killzone 2. Those 2 fps games should make some noise on release. Just on Final Fantasy and GoW2 alone i give xbox another round. 4-0 I am sorry Yahoo but I think for you to claim the Ps3 has taken the lead is false. They where behind and still are. A system with no exclusives to release will hurt more then ever because a person with one console no longer cares or needs you to play those blockbuster games. R.I.P Sony. Below i posted the original article from Yahoo.
