Tech advice on shopping technology for your kids.

Posted on Updated on

My suggestions for devices for kids. What they can make use of and prices. Why to get each device and which is safe proof to last.

Choices Choices Choices

Laptops – Pros: Gets a kid used to searching for stuff and using a keyboard. Later on in life they will need some type of computer knowledge for school or work . Starting early isn’t a bad thing. Kids these days are super smart and can pick up on things quick and practice their spelling, grammar and typing all in one shot.
Cons: Depending on what laptop you get or desktop things will either run smooth or not. Operating systems like windows 8.1. I love windows but i love windows 7. This mash of confusion between desktop and tablet OS i would suggest you avoid. Especially for a kid who will have to deal with screens dashing back and forth. Lack of Applications and just about everything else.

Shopping :I believe in the you get what you pay for theory. I used to be the person to buy just enough in my budget and go along with it. But i was never satisfied till i bought something great or the best at the time. The benefits is a great product that will last you awhile. But this is for kids so we want to spend just enough for them to enjoy it but not destroy our bank accounts. What kind of specs or brands do i suggest, well lets see. Theres HP, Dell, Asus and a number of other brands. It will come down to what you are willing to spend. Lets pick a price point of something compared to a Playstation 4 or Xbox one which kids love these days so you are talking 300-500 depending on the bundle. You can get computers with specs of an i5 cpu, 8 gigs of ram, and integrated graphics maybe intel 5000. This setup will be speedy enough to do everything casual on the net and some light gaming. If you want anything under 300 you will be dealing with Celeron and low ram portables which i personally hate because nothing gets to you like spending money on something that struggles to run. The i5 cpu and 8 gigs of ram will be great for a kid. For fun, for school work, for any of your work etc. Another thing to note, The more RAM the better when a computer has integrated graphics. Your video will share RAM with your system to help push the graphics. Storage space is about 500 gig or more in this price range. Which should be more than adequate for a kid or teenager to store anything he or she needs. Most mobile devices come with a wi-fi card to get online. From that point on its up to you to decide what programs your kid needs. Games, learning software, etc.

more choices and choices

Tablets – Tablets are a smaller version of a laptop. Most tablets today like the Apple iPad or Samsung’s galaxy tablets are touch screen devices. A majority run Apples IOS software or Google’s Android OS. The difference between the two are its interface and app stores. Each comes with its ups and downs but both do generally the same thing. To make it easy, think of them as over sized smart phones. Millions of applications minus the calling and texting on some. Why would i suggest a tablet for kids? Lets see.
Pros – Small and easy to carry around. Can do everything the laptop can. It has a build in camera for videos and pictures. Games and learning software. Social sites galore if your teenager is into it and all at a press of the screen. No typing in a URL to get to do some of those things and it all at your finger tips. Tablets can also watch movies, amazon prime, Netflix, hobo go and so on. Apples iPad gives you the change to pay for mobile internet. Those versions of the device usually sell for about $100 more than its counter part. Some devices you can add a sd micro card to boost your storage from 64 gig to 128. Another great thing is most tablets these days are part of your devices echo system. if you all have iphones and macbooks then the iPad might be the choice for your kid etc. With applications like iMessage and Facetime  and their cloud system to share pictures and goodies. Other brands have their variation of an echo system but none as refined as Apples.

Cons: Price for internet access with a carrier. Storage the more affordable ones usually come with 16 gigs of space only. Most apps do not take up a lot of storage but it can build up if you have a ton of applications or pictures and music and movies that you can add to your device. Mainly Apple tablets which come with pre made storage capacity. The Samsung tablets can use sd micro cards to boost their storage.

These tablets can all be purchased anywhere from I would say between 200 to 400. The 1st gen mini iPad goes for 299 if that as new. Used on Amazon I have seen them as low as $100 used and in good condition. Samsung tablets also don’t get to expensive until you start looking at their higher end products like the galaxy notes and pros. Another tablet you may see that’s great is the Nexus 7, goes for around 250-300 and is often battling the mini iPad for best 7” tablet market. It sports the newer updates from google and a very high res screen. Another tablet you may see a lot of but I would not suggest for kids is the Windows surface tablets. Those are mini laptops/tablets. The RT version is not worth the money. You can’t install your own software and need to depend on Microsoft’s miserable app store. The higher end pro surface tablets are a completely different story but for a lot more money. For a kid my suggestions would be 1st or second generation mini iPad and Samsung galaxy tabs and nexus 7. All provide a bit of everything for a kid.

Applications: Whether its a laptop or tablet you will have tons of choices to choose from. The difference is how much easier is it to do. A laptop you need to dig up applications yourself and install. Worrying about a virus, malware etc. A tablet from Apple and Samsung you will have millions of choices from paid to free to play with.

PS: Hardware on tablets aren’t as impactful as laptops. The iPad to this day runs on 1 gig of ram. Just make sure to see what brand benefits you.

Some of the best places to shop for devices for me are newegg.com and amazon.

Me , Myself and iPad

Posted on Updated on

It has been a minute since or maybe a year or two since i posted on this site.

I have moved on since then to my good old iPad. I am not an Apple fan boy but I am impressed with where we are going.  We have come to the age where mobility and comfort has replaced huge power house machines. It seems the further we move in technology the faster and smaller the devices get.  Now i can sit here and brag about my Apple iPad and what it can do compared to other brand named tablets but this article is more on where we stand as far advancement in technology.

Let’s start with the fun first. This aspect of the iPad is not revolutionary but a great add-on to a device. With major companies making games for the iPad its future as a mini gamer is very welcomed. Games like Madden Football. Grand theft auto:China town wars, Angry birds and Hero of Sparta the iPad, is very enjoyable as a gaming platform.  Those are only some of the game titles available. If you own a iPhone or iTouch you know they have a huge library of games.

Dungeon Hunter

Next we have reading and more reading. All types of reading though. To be completely honest I have not read as much in my life. Somehow reading on the iPad has made reading fun again. Let’s see what we can do.  If you have wi-fi or have the 3G version of the iPad you can surf the internet and have all types of access to reading. Newspapers , books etc. Below is an example. My folks are from Panama and love to read the paper from over there and with the iPad its a lot easier than on the computer or a laptop that weights way more and it looks cool compared to other people reading an old news paper.

La Estrella Panama
Books library

As you can see in the pic above its my books library.  On my iPad i currently carry 1.1 gigs worth of books. Doesn’t sound like a lot does it. In fact its 818 books.  You can also read pdf files and check your emails just like the iPhone and itouch can.

As great a device as this is there are a couple of downfalls. The biggest being no Adobe Flash from Apple. Secondly the prices on these great devices are not very friendly. $499 for the cheapest iPad with wi-fi only.

Is it worth the money? I believe it is. On one portable device you can carry your post office aka your email, hundreds or thousands of books aka library, your browser to surf anything anywhere aka your internet. Games aka your mini ps3 or Xbox. Not to mention its an iPad for your music and its your new block buster with Netflix or even with your own movies to add.

Bottom line if you decide to buy an iPad do not buy it to replace your laptop. A laptop can do so much more as far as programs, web caming etc. If you’re looking for a device to take around for social sites, checking emails on business trips or surfing the web. A device you can watch movies on a trip or even need a giant gps, the iPad can do it.

Violence in video games…or are we just looking for something to blame.

Posted on

I grew up on gaming and will be the first to admit the times have changed. What was once a 8-bit adventure of jumping over obstacles or solving a riddle or saving the princess has become a cine-graphic action packed animated movie. If it doesn’t blow up or isn’t real in someway it isn’t selling it seems. This article goes a bit further trying to show how society blames video games on murders and actions taking by a human being.

Lets start off with this article I found over at Kotaku.com

Xbox Developer Dead in Murder-Suicide

Very sad news from Redmond, Wash. Melissa Batten, 36, a software development engineer in Microsoft’s Xbox division, was murdered by her estranged husband, who then shot himself to death, earlier this week. Her husband, Joseph Batten, was also 36. He had also worked for Microsoft but most recently worked for Wizards of the Coast, publisher of hobby games such as Magic: the Gathering.

Ouch.  The full article is here. http://kotaku.com/5032443/xbox-developer-dead-in-murder+suicide

The thing that bothers me is that I played the games they where both involved in. If you skipped the link to read the full article. She worked on games like gears of war and halo 3 and her husband who killed her and then himself worked for Microsoft also and then wizards of the coast for magic the gathering.

http://kotaku.com/5032615/thailand-pulls-grand-theft-auto-after-murder

The above link is another article from kotaku.com and it’s about how Thailand stopped the selling of grand theft auto 4 after a teenager admitted to robbing and killing a taxi driver in re-creating a scene from the game. The police reports claim that the youth wanted to see if it was easy to rob and kill a taxi driver like it was in the game.

OK. At this point I’m thinking. Stop hiring people with a past to develop games or our kids have lost all sense of whats real and not and whats right and wrong.

http://kotaku.com/5032591/murder-suspect-too-busy-playing-guitar-hero-to-notice-impending-arrest

OK i knew something was weird about all the Guitar hero 3 people. I found this one kinda funny because to be honest he could of been on a perfect run on Through the Flames and the stupid police had to try and ruin it. Bad cops Bad. The 30 year old man was wanted for suspicion of killing a man in Charlotte he was then found living in Jacksonville. When the police approached him he was calm and collected playing a video game without a care in the world. This one gave me chills cause I live in Florida and i might have dueled this guy on the xbox. *shakes*

http://kotaku.com/5032451/fake-ransom-demanded-over-nintendo-computer

OK this one i can comprehend you know. We all want that Wii for Xmas. So snatch a kid from around you way you know, get some money go buy your Wii so you can play it for the rest of your life in jail. Makes sense.

My question is do we seriously blame games for our members of society with problems. I don’t blame our developers they make entertainment. Us blaming game designers or gaming company’s for our faults is like me saying i broke my ankle after trying to fly off my bike like the E.T. movie. Spielberg I’ll see you in court! lmao. My suggestion is this. Make consoles available now to young adults 18+ like cigs. Got I.D? or parents step up and watch your kids. At least till they grasp the concept of whats right from wrong.

Thanks to kotaku.com for the entertaining articles which this article is based on. enjoy.

A good interview. Be warmed allot of jargon and tech talk but you can understand most of it 😉 Noob.

Below I have provided a Rage preview video

While we are on the subject of Id and John Carmack. Quakecon just passed this weekend unveiling QUake Live. A free remake of the world renown Quake III game. This version of the remake will allow any computer with hardware basically from the past 3 years to run. This version will be browser based. So any computer will be able to run it.  OK im a huge fighter fan. Since Street Fighter 2 and so on played them all. Whether it was me cutting school to go to the nearest arcade and play or seeing my cousin smash a kids head into the SF2 screen I have loved it. I just feel fighting games are an extension of our fists. No I don’t promote violence this is of course written to entertain you. In the words of Maximus “Is this not what you want? Is this not why you are here?”  Aight lets get on to the videos. I’ll start with Tekken 6 footage.

Can’t forget THE fighting game of them all Street Fighter 4, this is only a cam video but it looks awesome to play i cant wait. Its gonna be released for the PC, xbox, ps3 and of the course ARCADE.

Street Fighter 4 comic con 2008 interview below.

Now the new released Soul Calibur 4. I’m hearing good things about it. I was never hardcore into the series. I do remember having fun the few times i played it and the beautiful graphics in it and you can use Yoda. Who wouldn’t want that. Below though you get to see Darth Vader go at it.
